Scientific and professional organizations in specific fields play a significant role in the development of an individual’s professional life, but this must be grounded in an understanding of ethical values and integrity. This was conveyed by the Director of the Postgraduate Program at Tarumanagara University (PPs Untar), Prof. Dr. Ir. Agustinus Purna Irawan, M.T., M.M., IPU., ASEAN Eng., in front of the students. As a professional engineer, Prof. Agustinus served as the keynote speaker for a public lecture held jointly with the Civil Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Untar, during the Practitioner Teaching Week event on Monday (10/13/2025).
Under the theme “Understanding Scientific and Professional Organizations Related to Management, Public Policy/Regulations, and Ethics at the National and International Levels,” Prof. Agustinus discussed the crucial role of professional organizations and scientific institutions in establishing ethical and sustainable governance and public policies. In his presentation, he emphasized that the professionalism of both academics and engineering practitioners is measured not only by technical competence but also by an understanding of ethical values, regulations, and social responsibility. “Ethics cannot be replaced by technology. Integrity, transparency, and social responsibility are the fundamental pillars of our profession,” he stated.
Prof. Agustinus also reminded that infrastructure development is not only technical in nature but also has broad social, economic, and environmental implications. “Working in the engineering field means contributing to the development of modern civilization. The current challenge is how we maintain sustainability and public safety in every project,” he explained.
Through this event, students gained insights into how ethical principles and public policies in engineering can be strategically implemented in both national and international contexts. Additionally, this lecture strengthened the synergy between academia and the professional world, reflecting PPs Untar’s commitment to realizing higher education oriented toward Integrity, Professionalism, and Entrepreneurship.
